Outdoor roller blinds

Outdoor roller blinds for Johannesburg and Pretoria

Tracked screens that drop down the open sides of a patio, veranda or braai area. Clear PVC keeps the view and the winter sun; aluminium side tracks keep the screen taut when a storm front pushes through, and the dust stays on its own side.

Overview

Close the patio before the weather decides for you

A highveld storm gives you about ten minutes of warning: the wind swings, the temperature drops, and then the rain arrives sideways. An outdoor roller blind running in aluminium side tracks closes the open side of a patio in seconds, and because the tracks hold the screen edges captive under tension, it stays sealed and quiet in the gusts that run ahead of the rain. Between storms the same screens keep blown dust off the furniture and take the bite out of a west-facing afternoon.

Urbanshades builds each blind to measure for its opening, from powder-coated, marine-grade aluminium with stainless fasteners and nothing ferrous to corrode. We measure at no charge across Johannesburg, Pretoria and greater Gauteng, quote fixed and in writing within 48 hours, and send our own Gauteng crew to install. The written guarantee is registered to your address.

How we work
Options

The choices behind your quote

Every blind is cut for its own opening. Screen material and operation are the two decisions that shape how yours works.

Crystal-clear PVC seals the opening without losing light or the garden view, and on a cold, clear winter morning it traps the sun's warmth, so the patio carries on as an extra room right through July.

Clear PVC screens

Tinted PVC keeps the outlook while softening the hard glare of the high-altitude sun. Solar mesh blocks most of the heat and still breathes, which suits a west-facing stoep that cooks from three o'clock.

Tinted and mesh fabrics

A crank or strap suits one or two smaller drops, with nothing to wire. Motorised blinds run several screens from one remote, and an optional wind sensor rolls them to safety when a gust front arrives before you do.

One screen, whole patio

A single solid drop blind closes the garden side of this patio. Lowered, it holds off wind, dust and low sun; raised, the opening goes back to full width.

Specifications

What goes into each blind

The standard every Gauteng installation is held to, from one doorway to a whole veranda.

Screens
Clear PVC when you want the view and the light, tinted PVC to tame glare, and solar mesh where heat and airflow matter most. Materials often mix across one patio.
Guides
Extruded aluminium side channels keep the screen edges captive under tension, sealing the opening rather than letting the fabric crack about in every gust.
Operation
Manual crank or strap, or a tubular motor with remote; rain and wind sensors are optional and every electrical part sits in an IP65-rated housing.
Dust and weather
Closed screens keep wind-blown dust, storm rain and cold draughts off the patio, which on the highveld means cleaner furniture between washes and warmer winter evenings.
Components
Tracks, rails and roller tube in powder-coated, marine-grade aluminium, fixed with stainless steel fasteners and nothing ferrous anywhere.
Guarantee
Tracks, screens and installation carry a written guarantee, registered to your address.
Quoting
A free site visit anywhere across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the East Rand, then a fixed written quote within 48 hours.
FAQ

Outdoor blind questions

The questions we hear most often at Gauteng site visits.

Will tracked blinds hold in a highveld storm front?

Yes, when they are specified for the site, which is what the free visit is for. The side tracks grip the screen edges so gusts cannot get behind the fabric, and we size tracks and fixings to each opening's exposure. In the most violent squalls the sensible move is still to roll up and let the storm pass, and we will say so plainly.

Do outdoor blinds keep dust off the patio?

Largely, yes. A closed screen stops most wind-blown dust at the opening, which anyone on the highveld in August will appreciate. Cushions stay cleaner, the table needs wiping less often, and the difference is most obvious on patios facing open ground.

Can I keep the view and the winter sun?

With crystal-clear PVC, yes on both counts. The screen reads close to glass, so the garden stays in view, and on a cold, clear Gauteng morning the closed blind traps the sun's warmth like a conservatory. Tinted PVC and mesh trade some of that view for glare and heat control.

Should I choose manual or motorised?

One or two smaller blinds are fine on a crank or strap, with nothing to wire. Motorised makes sense across wide openings or several drops, where one remote closes the whole patio in the minutes before a storm breaks, and an optional wind sensor takes over when nobody is home.

Does clear PVC yellow in the strong UV up here?

Good PVC resists UV well, and altitude does not change that if you look after the screen. Rinse off dust before wiping, use mild soap and a soft cloth, and never scrub with anything abrasive; grit dragged across the surface causes more cloudiness than the sun does.

What do outdoor roller blinds cost in Gauteng?

The size of each opening sets the base, and screen material, manual versus motorised and the number of drops move it from there; exposure adds cost only where heavier tracks are called for. We measure at a free site visit across Johannesburg and Pretoria and send a fixed written quote within 48 hours.

Can blinds be fitted to an existing patio or pergola?

Usually, yes. The tracks fix to existing beams, posts and roof edges as long as the structure can carry the load in a storm gust. We check that at the free site visit, and any strengthening goes into the quote rather than turning up as a surprise on installation day.
