Aluminium shutters for Johannesburg and Pretoria
Louvred aluminium panels that tilt for light and privacy through the day, then lock into a solid barrier across a window, door or patio at night. Made to measure, powder-coated, and fitted by our own Gauteng crew, with free site visits across Johannesburg, Pretoria and the wider province.
How the panels can open
Every set is made to measure and cut to the millimetre; what changes from job to job is how the panels move and the finish you choose.
Hinged & bi-fold panels
Panels swing open at single windows and doors, or fold back in linked pairs across wider openings. When you want the whole opening back, the set stacks neatly against the reveal and stays out of the way.
Sliding track systems
For patios, balconies and wide openings, several panels run along a top-hung track. Slide them across and turn the key, and the space behind them is locked while the louvres keep letting air through.
Interior shutters
Fitted inside as window shutters or room dividers, the louvres manage glare off screens and give bathrooms privacy without curtains. Highveld dust settles on the slats and wipes straight off.
Colours & finishes
The powder-coat range runs from crisp white through greys and bronze to matte black. The colour is bonded to the aluminium in an oven, so it keeps its depth under years of direct sun.
Light control by day, a locked barrier by night
In Johannesburg and Pretoria, window security usually means bars or gates, and both make a home feel harder than it should. A lockable aluminium shutter takes a different route. Through the day the louvres tilt like a plantation shutter's, setting light and privacy room by room; at night the panels lock closed and put a solid physical obstacle in the opening. No shutter makes a house impenetrable, and we will never claim otherwise. What it does is slow an intruder down, make quiet entry very difficult, and look considerably better than steel bars while doing it.
Each panel is powder-coated aluminium, made to measure for your openings and fitted by the Urbanshades Gauteng crew rather than a subcontractor. Site visits are free across Johannesburg, Pretoria and greater Gauteng, your fixed written quote follows within 48 hours, and the finished work carries a written guarantee registered to your address.
Suited to highveld conditions
Strong sun, dry dust and long security wish-lists are exactly what these panels are specified for.
Locked panels form a fixed barrier that takes loud, sustained effort to get past, which is exactly what opportunists avoid. We describe shutters as a serious deterrent rather than a guarantee, because that is what they are.
Honest security
The highveld sun is fiercer at altitude than the same hour at sea level, and it bleaches painted timber fast. Baked-on powder coat over aluminium holds its colour without sanding or repainting.
Sun-proof finish
Gauteng dust settles on everything, but on an aluminium louvre it has nowhere to hide. A damp cloth inside, or a rinse outside, brings the panels back to clean in minutes.
Easy with the dust

Aluminium shutter questions
What Gauteng homeowners want settled before they order.
How much security do aluminium shutters really add?
A locked shutter is a genuine physical barrier: the panels frame into the opening and have to be forced, slowly and noisily, before anyone gets through. That effort is what sends opportunists elsewhere. We are straight about the limits too: no barrier defeats every attempt, but a locked shutter turns a quick, quiet job into a slow, loud one.
Can shutters secure a patio or balcony?
Yes. A top-hung sliding track carries several panels across the full width of the opening, so a patio or balcony closes off as a lockable outdoor room. Furniture, braai equipment and the doors behind the shutters stay out of sight and out of reach, and the louvres still tilt for airflow with everything locked.
Will the powder coat fade in the highveld sun?
It is built not to. Powder coat is applied electrostatically and baked onto the aluminium, which makes it far more colourfast than paint on timber. UV at Gauteng's altitude is harsher than the same sun at the coast, and this finish is specified for exactly that exposure, so there is no repainting schedule to keep.
How do aluminium shutters cope with dust?
Better than most window treatments. Dust that would work its way into fabric simply sits on the powder-coated slats until you wipe it off with a damp cloth, or hose it off exterior panels. After a dry highveld August, cleaning a full patio enclosure is a job of minutes rather than an afternoon.
What do aluminium shutters cost in Johannesburg and Pretoria?
Two things drive the price: how many panels the opening needs, and how those panels are configured. A hinged pair on a bedroom window is a small job; a multi-panel sliding track across a patio is a different order of work, and the quotes reflect that. The site visit is free, and the written quote you receive within 48 hours is fixed.
