Venetian blinds

Aluminium venetian blinds for Johannesburg and Pretoria

Slatted blinds that let you set light and privacy separately, in two builds: slim 25mm powder-coated aluminium, and a 50mm Styrowood wide slat with the look of timber and none of its trouble around moisture. Measured to the millimetre and fitted by our own Gauteng crew.

Slat options

Two slats to choose between

Both are made to measure and both shrug off steam and dust; the real decision is proportion and style.

Slim white 25mm aluminium venetian blinds at a landing window

25mm aluminium slats

The slim classic. Powder-coated aluminium slats tilt to a precise angle and stay there, unbothered by bathroom steam, kitchen splashes or the film of dust a Gauteng winter leaves on everything. Raised, the stack all but disappears.

Wide 50mm white Styrowood venetian slats above a bath

50mm Styrowood wide slat

A broader blade in Styrowood, a moisture-resistant faux-wood. It gives larger windows and doors the weight of a timber venetian without the warping, and it hangs happily over a bath or a basin.

Overview

Why slats suit Gauteng rooms

The case for a venetian is control. Angle the slats upward and the afternoon sun bounces off the ceiling instead of glaring off the television; angle them down and the room stays bright while the neighbours see only slats. On the highveld this matters most at west-facing windows, where the late sun arrives hard and low, and through the dry months, when dust that would settle into a fabric blind simply wipes off aluminium.

Every Urbanshades blind is made to your window sizes after we take the measurements ourselves. The site visit is free across Johannesburg, Pretoria and greater Gauteng, the fixed written quote follows within 48 hours, and our own Gauteng crew fits the blinds inside the reveal or on the face, whichever the window calls for. The finished work is guaranteed in writing, registered to your address.

Why venetians

Built for sun, steam and dust

Aluminium and Styrowood keep working in the rooms and seasons that ruin fabric.

A dry highveld August coats every surface in fine dust. On sealed slats it stays on the surface: tilt them closed, run a damp cloth along them, and the blind is clean again.

Dust wipes off

Powder-coated slats stand up to years of strong, high-altitude sun without fading or chalking. There is no fabric to bleach and nothing that ever needs repainting.

Colour that holds

Neither aluminium nor Styrowood absorbs water, so bathroom steam and kitchen condensation cause no warping, staining or mould. The same blind works over a stove or a bath.

FAQ

Venetian blind questions

Worth knowing before you book the measure.

Should I pick 25mm aluminium or 50mm Styrowood slats?

Go by window size and the look you want. The 25mm aluminium slat suits most standard windows and stacks into a slim bundle when raised; the 50mm Styrowood slat carries the proportions of a timber venetian and looks right on larger windows and doors. We bring both to the measure so you can decide at the window itself.

Are venetian blinds a good choice for bathrooms and kitchens?

They are the blind we recommend first for those rooms. Steam and splashes sit on the sealed slats rather than soaking in, so there is nothing to stain, warp or grow mould. The 50mm Styrowood slat handles the same conditions if you would rather have a timber look over the bath.

How do venetians handle Gauteng dust?

Well, and it is one of the main reasons people choose them here. Dust rests on the slats instead of working into a weave, so cleaning is a damp cloth run along the closed blind, one side and then the other. Through the dry winter months that quick wipe is all the maintenance the blind asks for.

Will the slats fade in the sun?

The powder-coated finish is baked onto the aluminium and holds its colour through years of direct, high-altitude sun. Fading is mostly a fabric problem; a coated metal slat has no dye to bleach out. What you choose from the samples at the site visit is what the blind still looks like years on.

What do venetian blinds cost in Johannesburg and Pretoria?

Venetians are priced per window, and the size of each window moves the price far more than the slat width you pick. A whole-house order works out better per blind than a single window, because one visit and one installation cover the lot. The measure is free anywhere in greater Gauteng and the fixed written quote follows within 48 hours.

Which areas do you cover?

Our crew measures and installs throughout Johannesburg and Pretoria, taking in Sandton, Fourways, Randburg, Midrand, Centurion, Pretoria East and the East Rand. For other parts of Gauteng, just ask; the site visit costs nothing.
