White aluminium security shutters enclosing a seafront terrace with mountains and sea beyond

Security shutters that
still let the light in

Louvred aluminium panels that tilt for light and privacy, then lock into a solid barrier across windows, doors and whole patios. Made in our own Cape Town workshop.

Overview

Light control with a lock behind it

An aluminium shutter does two jobs at once. Through the day the louvres tilt like a plantation shutter's, so you set the light, the airflow and how much the neighbours see. Closed and locked, the panels form a fixed physical barrier across the window, door or patio opening, and it looks a great deal better than burglar bars ever will.

Urbanshades shutters are powder-coated marine-grade aluminium with stainless steel fasteners and no ferrous metal, so they handle salt air outside and a steamy bathroom inside without warping or rusting. Because a locked shutter is only as strong as its fit, we keep the whole job in our own hands: panels made to measure in our Cape Town workshop, fitted by a crew on our payroll rather than a subcontractor's. Once they're in, a written guarantee is registered to your address.

How we work
Options

Four decisions that shape the job

Every panel is made to measure in our workshop, so the real choices are how the shutters open and what they look like.

White hinged aluminium shutters framing a bedroom headboard wall

Hinged & bi-fold panels

Panels swing on hinges at single windows and doors, or fold back concertina-style across wider openings. Bi-fold sets stack against the reveal, so the full opening is there when you want it.

Charcoal aluminium security shutters closed across a patio on a sliding track

Sliding track systems

Multiple panels run on a top-hung track to close off patios, balconies and other wide openings. Slide them shut and turn the key, and an open patio becomes a secure outside room.

Matte black aluminium interior shutters beside a hanging chair

Interior shutters

The same louvred panels used inside: on windows instead of curtains, or as room dividers between living spaces. Blades tilt for glare and privacy, and the finish wipes clean.

Aluminium shutter panels in finishes from white through grey and bronze to black

Colours & finishes

Powder coat runs from white through greys and bronze to matte black, matched to your window frames or deliberately set against them. The colour is baked on, so there is no repainting later.

FAQ

Aluminium shutter questions

What Cape Town homeowners ask us before ordering shutters.

Are aluminium shutters actually secure?

Locked aluminium shutters form a genuine physical barrier, not just a visual screen. The panels frame into the opening and lock shut, so getting past them takes serious, noisy effort, which is what turns opportunists away. We won't tell you any shutter is impenetrable, because none is; we will tell you it is a far harder target than glass alone.

Can shutters close in a patio or balcony?

Yes. Sliding track systems carry multiple panels across wide openings, so an open patio or balcony becomes a lockable outside room. The panels stack to one side when you want the space open, and the louvres still tilt for airflow and light when everything is closed and locked.

Aluminium or wooden shutters — which lasts at the coast?

Aluminium, comfortably. Wooden shutters swell in winter rain, fade and crack in summer sun and need regular sanding and resealing, and it gets worse the closer you live to the sea. Powder-coated aluminium doesn't absorb moisture, doesn't warp and never needs repainting, which is why we build with nothing else.

Do aluminium shutters work indoors?

Yes. The same powder-coated panels work indoors as window shutters, room dividers and screens across openings between rooms. The louvres give you the glare and privacy control of a plantation shutter without the upkeep of painted wood, and the finish wipes clean instead of holding dust the way fabric does.

How do I clean aluminium shutters?

Wipe interior blades with a damp cloth; rinse exterior panels with a hose and wash them now and then with mild soapy water. Near the sea, rinse more often to keep salt off the powder coat. There is no sanding, sealing or repainting, because the finish is baked on and stays put.

What do aluminium shutters cost in Cape Town?

The cost comes down to how many panels you need and how they open: a pair of hinged panels at a single window is a much smaller job than a multi-panel sliding track running the width of a patio, so the two are priced very differently. We measure at a free site visit and hand you a fixed written quote within 48 hours.

How long from quote to installation?

Your panels are made to measure in our own Cape Town workshop, and we confirm the lead time in writing when you accept the quote. Fitting is the quick part: most window and door sets are installed within a day, and larger patio enclosures not much longer.
