Insulated aluminium ceiling panels with recessed downlights above a covered stoep

A finished ceiling under
your existing patio roof

Insulated aluminium panels that fit beneath IBR, polycarbonate or tiled roofs. The space below runs cooler, rain drums quieter, and flush LED downlights go in while we fit.

Overview

Panels that finish the roof overhead

A ceiling awning is a run of insulated aluminium panels fixed beneath an existing patio, stoep or veranda roof. Whatever is up there now, IBR sheeting, polycarbonate or tiles, stays put. The panels hide the purlins and brackets behind clean flat lines, while the insulated core stops a hot roof radiating its heat onto the people below, from high-summer coastal afternoons to baking highveld days before the thunderstorm arrives. Rain noise drops with it, and LED downlights can be recessed into the panels during the fit.

Urbanshades cuts each panel from marine-grade, powder-coated aluminium and fixes it with stainless fasteners, with no ferrous metal anywhere in the job. Measuring, manufacture and installation are handled by our own crew in each region, there is no structural rebuild and no rubble, and the written guarantee is registered to your address when we finish.

How we work
Why fit one

Three problems it solves

Bare sheeting keeps rain off and stops there. The panel layer beneath it deals with everything else.

A sheet roof stores the day's sun and radiates it downwards through the evening. The insulated core in every panel interrupts that, and the drop in temperature underneath is obvious from the first hot afternoon.

Cooler

The panels run in flat, unbroken lines from the wall to the fascia, hiding raw sheeting, purlins and brackets. The stoep starts to read as part of the house instead of an add-on.

Finished

Recessed LED downlights are wired in while the ceiling goes up, so there are no surface fittings and no cables on show. Dinner outside carries on after sunset under proper, even light.

Specifications

What goes into every ceiling

The spec we work to on every stoep, in both territories.

Panels
Insulated aluminium panels with a smooth finished face. Most clients choose white; other colours can be matched to beams or walls.
Fit
Fixed beneath the roof structure already in place, whether IBR, polycarbonate or tile. Nothing is rebuilt and the roof above is left alone.
Heat
Each panel's insulating core blocks the radiant heat that bare sheeting pushes down, keeping the area beneath noticeably cooler through summer.
Lighting
Flush LED downlights, positioned with you before the job starts and wired in while the ceiling is installed.
Rain noise
The panels absorb much of the drumming that rain makes on bare metal, so a downpour no longer ends the conversation.
Finish
Powder-coated aluminium with stainless fixings and no ferrous metal, specified to coastal salt-air standard regardless of region. Wipe-clean, never repainted.
Guarantee
A written guarantee covering panels, fixings and the fit itself, lodged in your name at the installation address.
Quoting
We measure free of charge throughout our Western Cape and Gauteng territories, then deliver a fixed written quote inside 48 hours.
FAQ

Ceiling awning questions

What owners of existing patio roofs ask before they book.

Where does Urbanshades install ceiling awnings?

Across two territories: Cape Town and the surrounding Western Cape, and Johannesburg, Pretoria and greater Gauteng. A dedicated Urbanshades crew covers each region, and both have their own pages on this site with local photos and contact details.

Will the panels fit under my existing IBR or polycarbonate roof?

That is the standard job, yes. IBR sheeting, polycarbonate and tiled roofs all take the panels, which fix to the structure already in place, so the roof itself is never opened up. Fixing points and the panel layout are confirmed at the free site visit.

Does a ceiling awning really make the patio cooler?

Noticeably. Bare metal sheeting soaks up sun all day and re-radiates the heat downwards, which is why a covered stoep can feel hotter than open shade in midsummer. The insulated core in each panel stops most of that transfer, so the space below sits far closer to true shade temperature.

Can downlights go into the panels?

Yes, and installation day is the cheapest moment to add them. The LEDs sit flush in the panels with the wiring hidden above, switched from inside the house. Positions are planned with you beforehand, usually over the table and the braai.

What does a ceiling awning cost?

The area being panelled, the shape of the roof and site access set the price, and lighting is usually the biggest variable, so every job is quoted individually. The site visit costs nothing and a fixed written quote follows within 48 hours.

How long does installation take?

A day or two for most homes. The panels arrive cut to size, nothing structural changes and the crew leaves no rubble behind. Timing for your particular roof is confirmed before you accept the quote.
